As odd at it may seem, the UN envoy to Sudan warns of further violence in Darfur:
"The United Nation's top envoy to Sudan Jan Pronk issued a stark warning that the conflict in Darfur could escalate despite the signing of the peace deal between Khartoum and the SPLA."
Can you believe that the decisions and statements of the Security Council are not enough to stop the violence? UN fiat is as powerful as the voice of Zeus. How can these rebels not listen to them? I for one find comfort in the UN's statements and declarations. I am shocked some one would ignore them. Nevertheless, we need not worry:
"He also urged the Security Council to use the threat of sanctions as a way of insisting on progress on the negotiating front.
'Sanctions are clearly still on table. It's important for all parties in Darfur, the government and the rebels, to understand there is a limit to tolerance, and that the fact of sanctions is still something to be considered. Secondly, on the political front, the engagement of John Garang in the Darfur process is very important.'"
Now we will see what these rebels will do with the threat of sanctions hanging over their heads. Expect to see them throw their guns down any minute now.
