Gays and adoption

The Supreme court will not review a Florida law banning gay couples from adopting a child. In the Agora has a some comments on this here and here. I was listening to a brief segment of O'Reilly Radio Factor. Bill thinks that this a bad law. He seems to think it boils down to a child either being a ward of the state and in foster care, or being in a loving "gay" home. It is difficult to argue when the debate is framed in those terms. However, I do believe a child is better almost anywhere than in a gay home. This, however, is about much more than just adoption rights. The more privileges a gay couple receive (i.e. survior benefits, adoption rights, legal and financial benefits) the more legitmate their union becomes. The gay community probably realizes that they can't seek solely legal sanction of gay marriage, although they will never cease pursuing that. They want to get every legal sanction they can so that there comes a time when it would ludicrous for us not to give them the sanction of marriage. They are going to fight this war on every front. Conservatives who are concerned for the spiritual health of our nation ought to be willing to meet them on every front. It was stated that UT allows only married couples to adopt. I think that is an excellent policy. The home where there is a mother and father is the best home for a child. A child who has gone through many challenges and is in foster care is not going to be helped by being placed in a detrimental enviroment--a gay home.
